My Story

Don Rechichi

Don participated in the 2006 RFDS Outback Air Race.He decided it was time to participate again in such a great fundraising event. This year Don has volunteered his services as Flight and Safety Director. He welcomes aboard his Instrumental Crew Margaret Halsmith and Jack Gregor. Don is a Commercial Pilot, Flight Instructor and Dentist.(Only tooth jokes involving aircraft are allowed!!) As a practising health professional Don has witnessed first hand the value of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The urgent transportation of patients to and from remote locations to enable health treatments in more major cities is possible largely thanks to the Royal Flying Doctor Service in each state.Don is committed to aviation safety. He welcomes the opportunity to assist all participants in the interest of safety for all.

Margaret Halsmith

Margaret is excited and pleased to be giving back to the RFDS.  For the five years that her daughter's family lived in the Pilbara, the RFDS brought her peace of mind. As her daughter said

"When you have a baby and a young child and the nearest hospital is much more than an-emergency-away, the RFDS brings 24/7 comfort and confidence."

Margaret's father chose her middle name after the daughter of his friend, Horrie Miller. and Margaret was raised on stories of Robin Dicks (nee Miller): ‘The Sugarbird Lady’ and ‘The Flying Nurse’.
At high school, one of her friends was Jenny Brearley (now  Houghton), great niece of Norman Brearley. At first Margaret thought Jenny’s aspirations to flying were rather fanciful however it wasn’t long before she caught the bug: during her first flight which was in a light aircraft over Carnarvon.
During the following many years, mostly in her capacity as a mediator, she accepted every opportunity to fly, work and play in remote areas of WA including Silent Grove, Kalumburu, Purnululu, Cape Leveque, Mt Hart and more.
In 2011, all of her ducks lined up and her flying lessons began. The basics beginning to fall into place, with her marvellous instructor she spent a week on a Pilbara adventure. Based in Newman, they flew across to Karijini, out to the Canning Stock Route and beyond.
Some time has elapsed since she has been at the controls. She is enthralled at the prospect of contributing to the RFDS by participating in the 2015 Outback Air Race as a member of 'The Instrumentals'.

Jack Gregor

Jack is proud to be the third member of the Instrumentals. He is a long-term pilot whose interests in aviation began when he determined matters involving pilots and aviation as a Member of the Australian Industrial Relations Commission. For five years he was President of RACWA and Vice President of the Royal Australian Federation of Aero Clubs. He has a long involvement with pilot training both in Australia and overseas. Service on industry safety bodies has kindled an ongoing involvement in aviation safety. Through his role as a Principal in the legal practice Gregor&Binet he advises clients on aviation related matters. He hopes to make a contribution to the OAR 2015 by providing daily BOM sourced weather reports to other participants. He also hopes to add to his many aviation adventures gained mountain flying in Spain, aircraft testing in the USA and not the least three days as a surprise guest at the Nullabor Road House where he landed due wx on one of his flights across Australia.
